Loc Journey With Jazzman LeSane

You may have been warned that you won't get a job, accepted into a school, or just won't be taken seriously. Your loc journey may have all types of challenges that you don't know how to face, but we're here to tell you... You Are Not Alone.

We sat down with Jazzman to learn more about her Loc Journey of 5 years. Below is what she had to say:

Do you remember what inspired you to grow locs?

I was inspired by my older sister and the women I would see who rocked beautiful locs. I wanted to remain natural while doing less to my hair.

What's the most important lesson you've learned along your hair journey?

The most important thing I’ve learned is patience. Be patient with your hair and be patient with yourself. One day you can hate your hair because a particular style didn’t turn out right and two weeks later you’re back in love with it because of the many compliments you’re getting.

What advice would you give to a person that wants to loc their hair?

Just do it! The sooner you start the happier you’ll be and the longer they’ll grow. Also, if you’re afraid of going through the “ugly stage”, get some braids or extensions over your starter locs until you’re comfortable with the length and shape of your hair.

Do you have any hair tips you'd like to share?

Less is more. Also, a little water, gel, and a silk scarf can go a long way on those days when you need a retwist and your hair isn’t styled.

What does professionalism mean to you?

Professionalism means to act in a way that is appropriate for the profession you’re in. Appearance plays a major role because it’s the first thing you see.

What's something you enjoy doing or what's one thing you're passionate about?

I enjoy mentoring youth, coaching basketball, and painting.

Lastly, is there anything else you'd like to share with us?

I would love for you all to check out my nonprofit organization, @thelesaneproject on Instagram. We help young people start their own businesses. One of the best feelings in the world is being your own boss and creating the life you want to live! Lastly, I love my hair and shout out to all of the beautiful women out there who look like me and rock this hairstyle proudly.
